Easy Ways To Put In Contact Lenses

Posted by techmatters 16/09/2014 0 Comment(s)

After buying your prescription contact lenses from eContactLenses.com.au, the most common issue many people have is putting their prescription contacts in for the first time.

The first thing all contact lens wearers need to do is ensure they have purchased the right prescription lenses and have had the proper contact lens tuition from an optometrist (or trained optical dispenser). The correct size and type of contact lenses should be able to move freely across your eye upon insertion and not cause any discomfort.

Whether you are just starting out with contact lenses, still find regular insertion tricky or simply looking for tips to make the process quicker, we have come up with a few steps to ensure you can insert your lenses as easy and comfortably as possible.

Before you start

  • When preparing to insert contact lenses the first step is to clean and care for them properly. Always store them correctly in contact lens solution, keep some wetting solution handy to help and adhere to the expiry dates. To ensure your contact lenses do not have any dirt and you aren’t putting any contaminates into your eye, make sure your hands are clean and dry before handling your lenses (including the painful sting of soap residue).

  • We recommend conducting this process while in a well lit room with a mirror. It’s a good idea to use the bathroom and lean over the sink in case you drop the lens.

Putting in your contact lenses

  • Take the first contact lens with your index finger and thumb, making sure you have the right prescription lens for the right eye. Rinse in a little saline or multipurpose solution.

  • Place the contact lens on your dominant index finger, with the lens inside facing out - this is a good opportunity to inspect the lens to ensure the condition, checking for jagged edges or other imperfections.

  • To help the lens slide onto the eye easier, place a drop of solution on the lens, like a bowl. The natural liquid film on your eye and the drop of solution on the lens will attract one another.

  • Gently pull your eye lid up with the opposite hand, while pulling the lower lid down with your dominant middle finger. It is a good habit to start with the same eye every time to get more used to the action, reducing anxiety over time and also ensure you don’t get the lenses mixed up.

  • Slowly bring the lens towards the eye and place it on the cornea (the clear film over the coloured part), and then gradually release the eye lids – the bottom first to avoid creating air bubbles and possible discomfort. It is also recommended to look upwards to help avoid blinking.

  • Without dislodging it, slowly blink a number of times to establish good vision and to ensure the lens is in the correct place. You can add a few extra drops of eye lubricant at any time to ensure your eyes do not dry out.

  • Repeat the process again with the opposite eye and enjoy the crystal clear sight your new contact lenses have brought you.
